AC MILAN 1971/72 ROSTER

SERIE A AND COPPA ITALIA

New arrivals, players staying and goodbyes. 1971/72 began with plenty of change as the incoming Federico Sordillo replaced Franco Carraro as Chairman, coinciding with the arrivals of Bigon, Sabadini and Sogliano. Nereo Rocco retained his place as manager, but the Rossoneri bid a farewell to Giovanni Trapattoni, who decided to finish his playing career at Varese after 13 years with the Club. It was a three-horse title race in Serie A between AC Milan, Torino and Juventus, the latter pipping the former two to the post by just a single point to win their first title in five years. The Rossoneri did end the season with silverware, beating Napoli by two goals to nil in the Coppa Italia final in Rome after having knocked out Juve, Torino and Inter. That was the Club's second cup title, following the triumph under the guidance of Silvestri in 1966/67.

UEFA CUP

The Rossoneri were also one of the better sides in the inaugural edition of the new UEFA Cup. Rocco's side came up against Cypriot side Digenis Akritas Mórphou, West German club Hertha BSC, the Scots of Dundee FC and Belgian outfit Lierse. Their run was only halted at the semi-final stage by Tottenham Hotspur
