Alexis Saelemaekers was born in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe (Belgium) on 27 June 1999. He initially developed as a right-back, but, thanks to his ability to push forward, he started to feel more and more comfortable further up the pitch. Now, he is considered a winger capable of occupying the full flank. He is adept at playing at speed and covering a large portion of the pitch, not limiting himself to the attacking third.
After progressing through Anderlecht's youth ranks, he made his debut for the Belgian side on 16 February 2018 and, over a period of almost two years there, went on to score twice and provide eleven assists in 64 appearances. He signed for AC Milan as the winter transfer window was closing in 2019/20 and started to feature more and more in Coach Pioli's midfield, so much so that he was – alongside Tonali – the Rossonero who made the most appearances (36) during the 2021/22 Serie A campaign.
As of 2022, Alexis has played 101 times for the Diavolo in all competitions and bagged six goals. His performances have also seen him called up to the senior Belgian squad. He debuted for Belgium in a friendly against the Ivory Coast in Brussels on 8 October 2020 and, in the same city, scored his first goal for his country in a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic in World Cup qualifying on 5 September 2021.
