Gonçalo Matias Ramos was born in Olhão, Portugal, on 20 June 2001 and developed footballing-wise at the Olhanense and especially the Benfica youth academies, with the latter the club with whom he found his first professional minutes (and goals) during the 2019/20 season. In that campaign he also stood out in the UEFA Youth League, ending the season as the tournament's top scorer with eight goals. He became a regular part of the first-team rotation, increasingly establishing himself as a centre-forward: in 2020/21 came his European debut in the Europa League, in 2021/22 he made his mark with 46 total appearances and 8 goals, including one in the Champions League. The breakthrough season was 2022/23, in which with 19 goals (out of 27 overall) he contributed to Benfica's title win, also becoming the youngest ever player to score a brace in the Lisbon Derby against Sporting.
He changed country in the summer of 2023, when he joined Paris Saint-Germain. With the Parisians he ended his first two Ligue 1 seasons in double figures, with a total of 45 goals in 131 appearances across his French years. There were many important goals, for example those against Manchester City and Barcelona in the Champions League, against Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup and at the death against Tottenham in a European Super Cup later won on penalties in Udine in August 2025. In total, he won 12 trophies in France: 3 Ligue 1 titles, 2 French Cups, 3 Super Cups, 2 Champions Leagues, 1 European Super Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup. His international journey with Portugal is also significant: after shining at youth level (notably the 2019 Under-19 European Championship, where he finished as top scorer), his first senior experience was effectively at the 2022 World Cup, where he shone with a hat-trick in the Round of 16 against Switzerland. He also took part in Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, as well as helping win the 2024/25 Nations League: by June 2026 he had a total of 26 caps and 10 goals with Portugal.
