Born in Arles in the south of France on 1 December 1997, Bennacer is of Franco-Algerian descent and began his career playing for his hometown team, Arles-Avignon. He was signed by Arsenal in the summer of 2015, who placed him in the Under-23 team and gave him the opportunity to play in the UEFA Youth League.

He made his debut in the first team in the League Cup, and on the last day of the winter market the same year, he went on loan to Tours. On his return, he was permanently transferred to Empoli, where he won the Serie B league title in his first year. His positive performances in the blue and white shirt convinced AC Milan to sign him.

In his first season with the Rossoneri, he played an important role alongside Franck Kessie in Pioli's 4-2-3-1, scoring his first goal on 18 July in the 5-1 win over Bologna. Despite some injuries, at the end of his first two years with AC Milan he had made 65 appearances in all competitions. His time with the Algerian national team was also important, and in 2016 he made his debut (after some appearances with France Under-18 and Under-19). In 2019 he won the African Cup of Nations in Egypt and was named as the competition’s best player.
