Mario Gila Fuentes was born in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, in Catalonia, on 29 August 2000. After coming through the youth ranks at Sabadell, Mollet, Damm and Espanyol, in 2018 he joined the Real Madrid academy, where Raúl promoted him to Real Madrid Castilla and named him vice-captain. Over three seasons with the Madrid reserves he made 73 appearances and scored 5 goals, also breaking into Carlo Ancelotti's first team, who handed him his LaLiga debut at the end of the 2021/22 season against Espanyol and Levante.
In the summer of 2022 he moved to Lazio on a permanent deal, making his Serie A debut on 31 August against Sampdoria. His first season with the Biancocelesti saw him play mainly in European competitions; in 2023/24 he moved up the pecking order and made his Champions League debut, establishing himself as a defender who is strong in one-on-one duels but also comfortable in build-up play, thanks in part to his background as a midfielder. The 2024/25 campaign was his first as a regular starter: he scored his first goals in Italy (against Fiorentina in Serie A and Real Sociedad in the Europa League) and was named by The Athletic in the Serie A team of the season. He confirmed his status in 2025/26 under Sarri, ending his time at Lazio with 120 total appearances before joining Rúben Amorim's AC Milan.
With Spain, he impressed at the 2023 Under-21 European Championship (losing the final to England); in March 2025 he received his first senior call-up from Luis de la Fuente, though he has yet to make his debut.
