Matteo Gabbia was born in Busto Arsizio on 21 October 1999. He joined the Rossoneri youth setup in 2012, representing the Club in regional youth leagues. On 24 August 2017, he made his first team debut in the Europa League against KF Shkëndija. After impressing for the reserves, he was loaned to Serie C side Lucchese for the 2018/19 season, before returning to AC Milan.
He established himself as a viable alternative for the Rossoneri's backline in the second half of the 2019/20 season, which Matteo finished with ten appearances between Serie A and the Coppa Italia. He was also a key player at the start of the following season, making eight league appearances and five in the Europa League, before an injury to his left knee affected the rest of his season.
He has represented Italy from the age of 14 and after the final in the Under-19 European Championship in 2018, he captained the National Team during the U20 World Cup the following year. He has since ended his time with the National youth teams following the Under-21 European Championship in 2021.
