Matteo Gabbia was born in Busto Arsizio on 21 October 1999 and joined the Rossoneri youth setup in 2012 with the Giovanissimi Regionali. On 24 August 2017 he made his first-team debut in the Europa League against Škendija; after his Primavera seasons, he moved on loan to Lucchese in Serie C in 2018/19 before returning to Milan. With the Rossoneri he carved out a role as a valuable alternative in the defensive department, particularly between 2019/20 and 2020/21, when he was often called upon and always answered the call. He was part of the squad that, in 2021/22, won the 19th Scudetto in the club's history.
His career took a significant step up after a brief but meaningful loan spell at Villarreal (13 appearances in 6 months between La Liga and the Europa League): Matteo was recalled in January to help cover several injuries in the defensive department and quickly became a key reference point for the Rossoneri back line. Memorable moments include his decisive goal in the derby in September 2024 and his first ever Champions League goal in Zagreb. By the end of 2025/26 he had made 143 first-team appearances, with 6 goals. From the age of 14, Matteo has been part of Italy's youth squads: after the Under-19 European Championship Final in 2018, he captained the team at the Under-20 World Cup the following year, completing his time with the youth sides at the Under-21 European Championship in 2021. He received his first senior Italy call-up in October 2024, though without making his debut.
