Mattia Caldara was born in Bergamo, Lombardy, on 5 May 1994. He is a central defender with a strong physical presence, with the ability to both mark well and begin attacks from the back. At 20 years old, after many years with Atalanta's youth academy, he made his Serie A debut with the Bergamo side against Catania, though they lost 2-1. After two loan spells at Trapani and Cesena, he made a name for himself during 2016 to 2018. During these two seasons, he was a key player in the Nerazzurri backline, making 54 Serie A appearances and scoring ten goals.
Then he arrived at AC Milan, though his first Rossoneri season was plagued by injuries, with only one appearance in the Coppa Italia and one in the Europa League. After 18 months, he returned on loan to Atalanta, where he had 25 appearances in a season and a half between Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League. Following his return to Bergamo, he found consistent form in successive seasons, first with Venezia (31 appearances and one goal in 2021/22) and then Spezia (20 games in 2022/23). He has also played for the Azzurri during his career, being part of the 2017 European Under-21 Championship squad that came third, and also making his senior team debut on 1 June 2018 during a friendly in Nice against the future World Cup winners, France. He won his first competitive cap in a Nations League fixture against Portugal in 2018/19.
