Pierre Kalulu was born in Lyon on 5 June 2000. As a schoolboy, he worked his way through the youth system at his hometown club, Olympique Lyon, but it was at AC Milan where he made his professional debut. His first breakthrough moment came in December 2020 when, in the space of six days, he got his first starts in the Europa League and in Serie A, capping it off with an equalising goal at Genoa.
He ended his first season with 18 appearances in all competitions, and also made his debut with the French Under-21 side. But it was the 2021/22 season where Pierre really made his mark. At the start of the season, he was initially first-choice cover for the right-back position, and also left-back when needed, but the turning point arrived in the second part of the season, where he came into his own. After the injury to Simon Kjær, Head Coach Stefano Pioli called on Kalulu to take up a central defensive role partnering Romagnoli or Tomori, and Pierre rose to the challenge.
He played a total of 37 times in the title-winning season, in all competitions, getting the winning goal in the match with Empoli. Alongside Tomori and Maignan, he was part of a defensive wall that closed out the season in fine fashion, conceding a meagre two goals in eleven matches.
