AC Milan are gearing up for their second fixture at the 2019 International Champions Cup – which will also be their final pre-season test in the United States. Coach Giampaolo’s Rossoneri side will be facing Benfica on Sunday 28 July at 15:00 local time (21:00 CEST). The Eagles are the most successful team in Portugal, winning a total of 37 league titles and also claiming the domestic cup on 26 occasions. As a team with a strong tradition, the Rossoneri previously beat Benfica twice during European Cup finals back in 1963 (Wembley) and 1990 (Vienna). Ahead of this latest encounter, let us now look at all of the interesting stats regarding Milan v Benfica, both in the ICC and in other competitions.
- Milan are unbeaten in official competitions against Benfica (4 wins, two draws), including two European Cup finals. Nereo Rocco’s Rossoneri were triumphant during the 1962-63 campaign, while Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan succeeded in 1989-90.
- The last official meeting between Milan and Benfica was back in November 2007 when they drew 1-1 in the Champions League following a goal from Andrea Pirlo: Benfica is the only team against whom he has scored more than one goal (two) in the top European competition.
- This is the fourth time that Benfica will face Italian opposition in the International Champions Cup, more than double the number of times they have come up against any other country.
- Milan lost their first match of this ICC (1-0 v Bayern Munich), yet they haven’t experienced two defeats in regular time in this competition since 2016 (v Liverpool and Chelsea).
- Milan have never failed to score in two consecutive matches of the International Champions Cup – previously they lost 1-0 on the first day of this year’s competition against Bayern Munich.
