There were some Rossoneri fans with a bad feeling ahead of the game against Fiorentina, the announcement that Matteo Gabbia would start in Florence recalling that disastrous debut from Rodrigo Ely in Florence back in August 2015.
Kalinic was in great form and the time, and this time around Dusan Vlahovic was the cause for concern. However, there was no need to worry, and Matteo Gabbia put in a solid performance without any major mistakes. His cross-pitch switch in the first half was a special source of appreciation, a moment reminiscent of his midfield days throughout the Rossoneri youth teams.
Florence was certainly a baptism of fire for Matteo Gabbia, and it was no mean feat to start his first game in such a fiery stadium, especially considering his only prior minutes had come off the bench in our home win against Torino. But Gabbia responded well to the challenge. The game in Florence was just the third time he’s started a game this season.
The first two came against Bayern Munich in Kansas City in July and against Feronikeli in Pristina in August, but neither of these had as much at stake as the game against Fiorentina. Matteo did his job on the night and helped AC Milan hang on to a point. He was then forced off with a niggle, but Gabbia has now put in two strong performances after months without any appearances. A strong start, here’s to hoping that he can keep it up.
