Celebrating against the best sides is always a good sign. For the Rossonere, it has become a tendency, one which started last season and has continued this campaign (now temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus emergency). Against Juventus, Fiorentina and Roma, the teams who have traditionally been the strongest in the women’s Serie A and with whom the Rossonere currently occupy the top four positions in the league, AC Milan have often risen to the challenge. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2019/20, Coach Ganz’s girls have picked up eight points from a possible twelve (six against Roma, one against Fiorentina and one against Juve), remaining unbeaten and scoring nine goals in four matches in the process. But it’s not just results which have been positive: significantly, AC Milan’s performances have caught the eye too.
Results in the big matches have always come after big team performances full of desire, sacrifice and huge shows of passion. It’s no coincidence that Maurizio Ganz has used the term 'warrior' to describe his players. A prime example came in the draw against Juve at the Brianteo, with Vitale scoring the equaliser to make it 2-2 right at the death. Or the win against Roma at Vismara, when Thorvaldsdottir and her teammates found the strength to come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the second half. And let's not forget the Derbies: the Rossonere have won four out of four in the last two years across the league and Coppa Italia. Very promising signs where character has come to the fore. And signs which will be sure to fill the team with hope for their pursuit of a Champions League spot upon their return to the pitch.
