He is one of the most complete and exciting forwards of his generation, and he is ready to embrace a new challenge, bringing with him a proven record of crucial goals and major trophies. Meet Gonçalo Matias Ramos, the new striker for Rúben Amorim's AC Milan and the Rossoneri's first signing of the summer. A complete centre-forward, Ramos began his career as an attacking midfielder before gradually establishing himself as a central striker, making the most of his physical presence, athleticism and technical ability. Football runs in the family: his father, Manuel Ramos, played for Farense and earned appearances for Portugal's youth national teams. The new Rossoneri forward was born in Olhão, Portugal, on 20 June 2001. After taking his first footballing steps with his hometown club, Olhanense, he continued his development in Benfica's academy, where he laid the foundations for his rise at the first major club of his career.
With the Eagles, Ramos steadily climbed through Benfica's youth ranks, making his debut for the reserve team in January 2019 while also shining in the UEFA Youth League, where he finished as the competition's top scorer in the 2019/20 season. That same campaign, during the summer months following the COVID-19 postponements, Gonçalo made his senior debut for Benfica. It was an unforgettable introduction: he scored twice in just three minutes during an away victory over Desportivo Aves. After beginning the 2020/21 season in prolific form with Benfica B, he was promoted to the first team by Jorge Jesus. His first start came in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round against Spartak Moscow. From that moment, Ramos steadily climbed the pecking order at Benfica, with his rise culminating in the 2022/23 season, the campaign that firmly established him as one of Europe's most promising strikers.
The season that saw Benfica return to the top of Portuguese football also proved to be Gonçalo's finest. After scoring 14 goals between 2019 and 2022, he bagged 27 goals in all competitions in a single campaign: 19 in the Primeira Liga (second only to Taremi in the scoring charts), one in the League Cup and an impressive seven in the UEFA Champions League. Performances like these inevitably attracted the attention of Europe's elite clubs. Paris Saint-Germain won the race for his signature, and Ramos made his official debut on 12 August in a goalless draw against Lorient. Despite missing time through illness, he finished his first season in France with 14 goals and completed a domestic treble, winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions.
The following campaign, 2024/25, brought even greater success. His goal tally rose to 19 in all competitions as PSG completed the first treble in the club's history, crowned by their UEFA Champions League triumph over Inter in the final in Munich. Ramos also played a key role during the summer. He was one of PSG's standout performers at the FIFA Club World Cup, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, before making a decisive impact in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham in Udine. Introduced in the 77th minute, he struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to make it 2-2, a goal that paved the way for Luis Enrique's side to lift the trophy on penalties. He found fewer opportunities, particularly as a starter, during the 2025/26 season, but still finished the campaign with a double-digit goal tally. One of those goals secured a prestigious away victory over Barcelona and saw him become PSG's all-time leading scorer off the bench.
His third season in France ended with another historic double, following victory in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, as PSG added a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title to their Ligue 1 triumph. Gonçalo played his part by converting the opening penalty in the shootout of the final against Arsenal. A serial winner with a knack for delivering in the biggest moments, Ramos has shown the same qualities with Portugal. After finishing as the top scorer at the 2019 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, he earned his place in the senior national team squad ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His senior debut, in a friendly against Nigeria, mirrored his first appearance for Benfica as he marked the occasion with a goal. It was in the Round of 16 against Switzerland at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, however, that he truly announced himself on the global stage. Handed his first start by Fernando Santos, Ramos responded with a stunning hat-trick and an assist in Portugal's 6-1 victory, becoming the first player since Miroslav Klose in 2002 to score a hat-trick in his first World Cup start, and the first since 1990 to do so in a World Cup knockout match. He was part of Portugal's squad at Euro 2024 and is currently representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His impressive honours list also includes the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League title. Now, a new chapter begins with Milan, where he will look to add more goals, trophies and ambitions to an already remarkable career.
