Football is always home to heated rivalries, formidable opponents and enticing match-ups. This season’s Women’s Serie A has seen all of these things, and once again AC Milan’s destiny seems to be tied to that of Fiorentina, who still hold a spot as one of the big names in the Italian top flight.
Fiorentina finished second in 2018/19, securing a Champions League spot on the final day of the season which meant that Milan missed out. The two games between the two that season saw a win for either side: 3-2 to the Rossonere at Vismara and then 4-0 to the Viola in Florence. One year later, AC Milan and Fiorentina are still battling it out for the same second spot in the table, with both sides tied on 35 points from 15 games played, and both sides with the same goal in mind: Champions League qualification. In terms of the title, it seems set for Juve, who sit nine points clear in full control of top spot.
AC Milan and Fiorentina have already met twice this season, once in the league (1-1 in Florence) and once in the first leg of the Coppa Italia quarter-finals (2-1 to the Viola in Monza). On both occasions, former Fiorentina forward Deborah Salvatori Rinaldi scored for Coach Ganz’s girls. When football does return, the two sides will meet twice more almost immediately, in Serie A at the Stadio Brianteo and then in the second leg of the Coppa Italia quarter-final at the Stadio Bozzi.
These two results will be huge for the Rossonere’s season. Fiorentina are a solid and well-established team, but AC Milan are too, and two wins for the Rossonere would lift hopes and allow our girls to dream big once again.
