For the Rossonere, one frustrating aspect of the enforced break in league action is the fact that Maurizio Ganz is currently unable to make the most out of the team’s January signings and Berglind Björg Thorvaldsdottir in particular. One month was all that the Icelandic striker needed to make the difference: after arriving in mid-January, she went on to score five goals in six games before the women’s Serie A was halted, also providing an assist. A huge impact.
Since her debut, no other player has scored more goals in the league, while only Sassuolo’s Claudia Ferrato (five) has found the net more at home than the AC Milan forward (four, level with Valentina Giacinti). Her first two goals came on her debut against Roma at Vismara. They were both crucial too as she began and then finished a fantastic comeback to secure three precious points for the Rossonere.
Thorvaldsdottir also got on the scoresheet in the return Derby fixture in Serie A at the beginning of February: she bagged the equaliser at the Brianteo, with AC Milan going on to win the match thanks to captain Giacinti’s strike in the closing stages. On loan from Breiðablik, the 28-year-old from Vestmannaeyjar, who also features regularly for her National Team, netted against Pink Bari and Tavagnacco too.
Another new face in Coach Ganz’s squad is Pamela Begič, another attacking player but with different characteristics to Thorvaldsdottir. Although she hasn’t played as much and has had less of an impact, the 25-year-old Slovenian has undoubtedly added something to the group. If and when the current season restarts, Begič will be aiming to score her first goal in Italian football after coming close to doing so on a number of occasions.
