It’s difficult to bounce back after unexpectedly and painfully suffering relegation, but doing so makes you stronger and better. The 1-0 victory achieved by AC Milan's Under-19 side in Cagliari on their return to the Primavera 1 division was born from the 1-1 draw in Florence on 25 May 2019, when the team played their final fixture of the 2018/19 campaign. A new start, almost 16 months on. From that afternoon, the Rossoneri youngsters had only one objective: to return to the top flight.
It was clear that the Diavolo would be making a return to the Primavera 1 division well before they made it mathematically certain: they won 17 and drew two, collecting 53 points and scoring 61 goals in 19 games. This was thanks to the desire and quality displayed by a group that channelled anger into something positive and hasn’t undergone revolutionary changes in recent times. The Club showed confidence in Coach Giunti and his technical staff, with this also applying to the majority of the players.
This continuity has been vital. It’s been a challenging return to the top flight, not helped by the problems that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused. After beating Cagliari, the Rossoneri narrowly lost to Atalanta and Juve. In the middle of those two fixtures, the team made it through to the last 16 of the Primavera TIM Cup.
So far, AC Milan have played really well. However, the Rossoneri need to turn good performances on the pitch into points. The teams they’re coming up against are strong and determined, so the Diavolo need to fight in every minute of every match. Our lads won’t stop putting in the hard work as they look to develop and earn their place in the senior setup. Daniel Maldini, Lorenzo Colombo and Giacomo Olzer, who are on the cusp of breaking through, are proof that it can be done.
