The explosive 4-4 draw with Monza last week was a strong way to reach the three quarter mark in the season for the AC Milan U18s, whose league campaign restarted at the end of February, owing to a long winter break because of COVID. In a close group containing 11 teams, Coach Terni’s boys find themselves in 10th place with 14 points from 14 games.
Nothing, though, is guaranteed in such a tight league, so much so that only six points separate the Rossoneri from 4th-placed Atalanta; the top four qualify for the Final Four Scudetto. Given that AC Milan have already had both their seasonal rest periods, they have played less games than many teams currently above them in the league - so this gap could still be reduced further.
More than the results, however, what is important at this level is the team’s performances and growth, and - in that sense - the signs have been encouraging in the games played so far. We need look no further than, for example, the Derby win over table-topping Inter or the draw with Roma, the other top side alongside the Nerazzurri. As such, this 2003-born group shares many similarities with Coach Giunti’s Primavera side, as AC Milan successfully build a primary objective of educating and developing players.
Looking ahead to the future, it will be a crucial month for Coach Terni’s youngsters, with six games in a little over a month - from 16 May to 20 June - that will finish off this first faze of the season, to decide qualification for the Final Four and, ultimately, to find a winner. We kick it off next weekend with a game against Sassuolo, around 24 hours after Coach Ganz’s Women’s First Team take on the same opponent, hoping for a place in the Women's Champions League.
