The Primavera’s return to league action couldn’t have gone better: After 42 days without playing as a result of the winter break and the pandemic, the Rossoneri built on their excellent December form (three consecutive league victories, four wins from five matches), recording their fourth successive win. And it came against a tough opponent in Empoli, the reigning Italian champions who are impressing in the UEFA Youth League.
It ended up being a comfortable victory for AC Milan, who showed a different side to themselves in the process. The Rossoneri were clinical and found the net with their first real chance after Pseftis had saved Degli Innocenti’s penalty. The team also stuck together after the visitors’ equaliser, striking a quick-fire double blow through Nasti (who had opened the scoring) and Roback to pass a real test of maturity.
Starting from their win against Juventus in mid-November, the Diavolo have picked up 15 points from their last six league fixtures, a run that has given the team momentum and brought them to within touching distance of the playoff zone. Indeed, two points separate Coach Giunti’s side from sixth place – the last position that guarantees access to the Primavera 1 finals – and they have a game in hand.
Many matchdays remain and there is still room to improve, starting from the next fixture. And it’s a highly-anticipated showdown, too, with AC Milan and Inter set to lock horns at Vismara on Tuesday afternoon in the first Derby of the season. It provides the opportunity for the Diavolo to record their fifth consecutive win and for Marco Nasti to get on the scoresheet once more. He’s scored six times in his last five matches and has become a real talismanic figure: whenever he’s found the net, AC Milan have always won.
