On 28 July 2019, at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, just outside of Boston, Marco Giampaolo’s AC Milan lost 1-0 to Benfica. Former Rossonero Adel Taarabt scored the winner that day via a deflection off Lucas Biglia. Almost three years later, on 23 July 2022, the Rossoneri experienced the unwelcome taste of defeat in a pre-season friendly again.
Five players remain from the team that lost in the US three years ago: Marco Brescianini, Daniel Maldini, Davide Calabria, Rade Krunić and Matteo Gabbia. As regards the latter, he made it clear that the group was annoyed with the result against Zalaegerszegi TE on Saturday.
“For us, the result isn’t of secondary importance. We wanted to win because this is our mentality. Whenever we don’t win, it annoys us,” said AC Milan’s No.46, whose words reflect the attitude of the team.
Hopefully, then, the loss stung, with it being clear from the Rossoneri’s spirited second-half performance that they didn’t want to finish on the losing side. This evening, the Diavolo will take to the pitch again with the desire to make amends.
