The turning point of the Championship Round came with one of the most beautiful victories of the season for the women's AC Milan. A 3-1 victory in the Derby against Inter, which, for Ganz's team, also means the return of a home victory in the derby after more than two years: the last time, in the league, was on 18 October 2020. Then the final result was 4-1, but the smaller gap on this occasion means much more. First of all a redemption, after in the first two previous matches of the season AC Milan had come away beaten and with two heavy defeats.
Then the course reversed in a second phase of the season that had so far been lacking satisfaction, with only one point collected in three matches despite the good performances produced, especially against Juventus and Fiorentina. The Rossoneri end the first leg in third place in the standings with 38 points, the same as the Tuscans on whom, however, Bergamaschi and her companions are ahead in the head-to-head. Juventus is distant, in view of the Champions League, but to be confirmed at the end of the season as the third force in the championship would be an important sign of continuity in a year in which the level of the women's Serie A has undoubtedly risen.
What was so pleasing about the afternoon at the PUMA House of Football, marked by goals from Grimshaw, Piemonte and Vigilucci, was above all the spirit of the Rossonere. Stronger than the difficulties - in terms of absences, many and heavy, but also of the moment of the match after Polli's equaliser - and able to take back a challenge that seemed to get out of hand. "We regrouped, put up a fight and did not give up. The important thing is to stay united and fight, we succeeded and we showed the strength of our group," are the words after the match of captain Bergamaschi to best summarise the game.
Testifying to this was also the beautiful and collective jubilation at the final whistle: an enthralling happiness on the part of all the members of a team that had so many good performances. From Martina Piemonte - decisive goal and assist - to the other scorers of the day in Christy Grimshaw and Valery Vigilucci; from a decisive Laura Giuliani with two important saves in the second half to the incisive and promising return of Chanté Dompig, having recovered from a long injury. Four chapters remain in 2022/23 for the Rossonere: the hope is that the success over Inter can represent that spark to close in the best possible way, with continuity and enthusiasm.
