Ecuador, with Pervis Estupiñan involved in the closing stages, produced a historic comeback at MetLife Stadium, overturning an early deficit to beat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. Germany took the lead after just two minutes through Sané, but Angulo levelled seven minutes later before Gonzalo Plata scored the winner in the 78th minute. Estupiñan came on in the 71st minute to replace Hincapié and helped his side see out the victory. Ecuador's Round of 32 opponents will be confirmed once the group stage has concluded.
The USMNT, meanwhile, suffered a 3-2 defeat to Türkiye, but the result had no impact on Mauricio Pochettino's side, who had already secured top spot in Group D. Christian Pulisic, back after recovering from a calf injury, came on for Weah in the 58th minute and immediately looked dangerous, going close to scoring and also striking the post. The USMNT will return to action in Los Angeles, where they will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their first knockout-stage match.
