Our Technical Director Paolo Maldini was one of the key members of today’s Season Kick-Off Q&A at Milanello. Here’s what he had to say:
THE TRANSFER MARKET
“A year ago we laid the foundations for an idea of the AC Milan of the future. This year we’ll make targeted signings. We probably won’t be able to make any huge buys like we’ve been able to in the past, I don’t want to give the fans any illusions, but we’re always active, ready to seize any transfer opportunities that come our way. How much reinforcement does this AC Milan side need? It may just be a case of making a few small changes, but we’ll do everything we can to improve the squad. Bakayoko? It’s useless trying to say otherwise, he’s a player who we know well and rate highly. The negotiations are ongoing, he’s one of our objectives.”
IBRA
“We’re working together with Zlatan’s entourage to reach an agreement. We know we don’t have a lot of time before the season begins, so our plan is to make the deal soon. Plan B? Of course we’ve got one, just like we’ve got a plan C and a plan D, but our priority is Ibra.”
A EUROPEAN ROLE MODEL
“Bayern Munich are without a doubt a role model for us. We’re still a long way off, but that’s our path. Reducing the gap isn’t easy, especially considering the laws on Financial Fair Play.”
A RENEWAL FOR DONNARUMMA
“We’ve now reached the final year of his contract and that’s an issue. At the moment it’s right that we fix the question of Ibra first, then we’ll think about a contract renewal for Gigio. There’s trust, because we know that he wants to stay and because of that we’re ready to make an offer fitting for his value. Çalhanoğlu? We’ll meet with his agent in the first weeks of September to speak about a renewal.”
A MESSAGE FOR THE FANS
“I’d like to thank them, because they always manage to give us something special. Our biggest source of regret is the fact that we couldn’t share the end of last season with them. Playing that type of football in front of our fans would have been special: we can’t wait to have you back at the stadium.”
