A BAD DAY IN BERGAMO

The Rossoneri lose 5-0 away to Atalanta

A bitter defeat to mark an end to 2019 for the Rossoneri. AC Milan lost 5-0 to Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, with goals from Gomez, Pašalić, Iličić (two) and Muriel. After a streak of four games unbeaten, Milan failed to keep up their momentum and never really found a way into the game. Atalanta started the game in control with great pressing and intensity, never dropping off over the course of the 90 minutes. Despite the constant support of the Rossoneri fans, the side just couldn’t find a performance to match recent weeks. This marked an upsetting end to the calendar year for AC Milan, but now the side have two weeks to reset, recharge their batteries and then return with more spirit than ever in the new year, which will kick off on 6 January against Sampdoria at San Siro. For now it’s just best that we put this afternoon to forget behind us.

MATCH REPORT
Atalanta started the game by piling on the pressure, with Donnarumma forced into a save by Iličić in the opening exchanges. The hosts then took the lead after just ten minutes, Gomez skipping past Conti and smashing one past Donnarumma into the roof of the net. After a strong period of build-up in the 18th minute, Milan came close as Musacchio’s header off Suso’s cross went just wide. Rodríguez had an effort from distance in the 28th minute but it swerved away from the target. A poor first half from the Rossoneri was concluded with an inaccurate attempt from Çalhanoğlu in minute 35, with Milan on the back foot for much of the match. Calabria replaced Rodríguez for the second half, but Atalanta continued to boss the game. Pašalić diverted Gosens’ shot into the net to make it 2-0 after 61 minutes, while Iličić netted a third on the break just a minute later. Coach Pioli showed his hand by throwing Piątek into the mix, but Milan were still struggling and it wasn’t long before the home side found a fourth as Iličić curled his second into the top corner. Muriel had the final say as he beat Donnarumma to tap home for 5-0.
