Federico Giunti's AC Milan Primavera side got off to a winning start in the Mamma Cairo Cup. On Friday 30 August, the Rossoneri defeated Inter at the Stadio Bosia in Asti in the second match of the tournament. The match finished 2-1 to AC Milan, who will meet Juventus (who beat Torino on penalties after a 0-0 draw in regular time) in the final this evening at 21:00 CEST in Asti.
This was a test of character and maturity for the Primavera, with the Derby always being a fascinating match with a bit of added spice. Determination and a combative, ruthless spirit: this is what the starters and those who came on after the break displayed during the match. They were the ingredients that allowed the team to never give up right until the very end, with the winning goal coming late on. This was a positive performance both from a collective and individual standpoint. The new arrivals also impressed, including Luan Capanni, Riad Tahar and Emanuele Pecorino.
AC Milan began the match strongly and took the lead after four minutes through a great goal from Alessandro Sala, but Inter hit back almost immediately as Youte found the back of the net following a corner. The Rossoneri then went close through Sala and Frigerio before the first half came to an end. AC Milan threatened once more after the break, with Sala unfortunately unable to grab his second after combining well with Maldini.
Although precision was lacking at certain times, both teams were looking to bag a second and had opportunities to do so. And it was AC Milan who eventually regained the advantage thanks to great work by Alberto Barazzetta: he showed great determination to chase down a long ball and pick out Riccardo Tonin, who beat the goalkeeper and netted the goal that sent the Rossoneri to the final.
GIUNTI: "A GREAT TEAM SPIRIT"
“For us, it was a test to see where we’re at. We’ve been able to assess the condition we’re in as we had towards the league season. We played well, I was impressed with the lads who came on and the spirit they showed. I believe that this is the most positive aspect of the evening. The team are feeling good, perhaps we need to change something in terms of numbers but I’m happy with the lads I have at my disposal. The poor season last year has to provide us with the motivation to push for promotion, which is our objective this campaign.”
THE WORDS OF LUAN CAPANNI
“I’m very happy because the Derby is a different type of game which all the lads dream of playing in. We put in a good performance, but now we need to rest and prepare for Juventus. I’d like to thank Coach Giunti, who is helping me to understand what he wants from me. I’m happy and always ready to help the team. I’d also like to thank all my teammates, who have helped me integrate into what is a great squad where the players are all friends. We’ll go far with this spirit.”
THE WORDS OF RICCARDO TONIN
“Winning this way is important because we haven’t managed to do so for a while in the Derby, despite continuously putting in good performances against Inter. Everyone played well, and this will give us a morale boost after last season. We showed a bit more fervour and desire to pick up the win. We’re a great group, the new arrivals have integrated well and a great season is in store for us.”
