GIROUD IS THE MVP FROM GENOA v AC MILAN

Decisive in an unfamiliar role: Oli's unforgettable night at the Marassi

184 days have passed since Olivier Giroud became an AC Milan player. Since that date, on 17 July 2021, there have been so many memorable moments, with the Frenchman having scored numerous goals and decided important matches across Italy and Europe. As one of the best strikers of his generation, it’s what he’s used to doing.

But the way Oli left his mark in Genoa v AC Milan was truly special and probably unrepeatable, meaning it’s no surprise that he’s been voted as the MVP from the match by the Rossoneri fans on the AC Milan Official App. Out of the 39 minutes he played at the Marassi (including 15 stoppage-time minutes), the final eight where he found himself between the sticks will remain unforgettable.

Eight minutes that never seemed to end following Maignan’s sending-off. After Guðmundsson’s free-kick had hit the bar via a deflection off Tomori, Giroud, like a seasoned goalkeeper, showed real bravery and confidence to rush off his line to deny Pușcaș. In between, he displayed all his leadership qualities and a calm head during a truly frantic finale.

We’ve now recorded four consecutive wins in the league, and a lot of credit for the latest victory goes to Olivier Giroud, who stepped up to play in an unfamiliar role during a moment of need. Before the closing stages of the match, the Frenchman was his usual hard-working self, battling away and making a couple of ball recoveries up top. However, on such a night, statistics can take a back seat. Chapeau, Olivier!
