Following the passing of Renzo Burini, the “fourth” player of the famous Gre-No-Li AC Milan side, only two former Rossoneri players born in the 1920s now remain with us. They are goalkeeper Lorenzo Buffon, born on 19 December 1929 and defender Mario Bergamaschi, born earlier than that on 7 January 1929. Buffon was in attendance for the inauguration of Casa Milan, the Rossoneri’s new headquarters, in May 2014.

Mario Bergamaschi recently spoke to Rossoneri historian Luigi La Rocca: “The best match AC Milan have played this season was against Torino, at least in the first half anyway. However, AC Milan can and must play better, the team need to do more running and show more conviction.”  Bergamaschi was a Rossoneri player in the 1950s and won two Scudetto titles. His nickname was ‘Spanna’.

Bergamaschi still passionately follows Milan and is convinced that Suso has quality and can be a spark but only out wide and not in central positions. After making 151 appearances for the Rossoneri, Bergamaschi didn’t just win the title in 1955 and 1957, but also the 1956 Latin Cup.

Lorenzo Buffon featured 300 times for Milan. He won the Scudetto four times and the Latin Cup twice with the Rossoneri. Known as ‘Tenaglia’ and ‘Lorenzo Il Magnifico’, Buffon was a historic goalkeeper for Milan. He started out at Portogruaro and went on to have a great career, also making 15 appearances for Italy. He was also known for his marriage to Edy Campagnoli from the Mike Bongiorno TV show ‘Lascia o Raddoppia’. Buffon remains an unforgettable figure from Rossoneri history.
