#TBT: AC MILAN VS THE GREEKS

Carlo Tresoldi, Christian Panucci and Yoann Gourcuff: the 3 unusual strikers

In Europe, AC Milan and Greek teams have faced each other five times. And the Rossoneri have always had the last laugh. In the European Cup, Olympiakos was eliminated in 1959 and Aek Athens was defeated twice, in 1994/95 and 2006/07. Then, AC Milan eliminated Paok in the 1973/74 Cup winners' Cup and went through to the next round in the last edition of the Europa League, in the group where Aek Athens was also present. A constant trend over time during the matches against Greek teams: the goalscorers. Not really born goal-scorers...

1973/74: CARLO TRESOLDI
Carlo Tresoldi was AC Milans' historic masseur for years. His namesake was a striker who wore the Rossoneri tunic from 1968 to 1974 when he was traded for Egidio Calloni in the negotiations between AC Milan and Varese. Brave and gentle, but Tresoldi as a player was unlucky: many injuries in the topical moments of his career. The only goal of the Bergamo striker in European cups was against a Greek team. In the quarter-finals of the 1973/74 Cup Winners' Cup, AC Milan won 3-0 in the first leg at the San Siro stadium against Paok Thessaloniki. In the return leg, immediately after the 2-1 goal scored by Sarafis, Cesare Maldini sent Tresoldi into the game in place of Bergamaschi. Then came the goal for the final 2-2 result. AC Milan was through to the Semifinals.

1994/95: CHRISTIAN PANUCCI
The Rossoneris', coached by Fabio Capello, were forced to play the other two group matches against Aek Athens and Ajax on neutral grounds because of the object that hit the goalkeeper, Konrad, in Milan-Salzburg. At the Nereo Rocco stadium in Trieste, on the 2nd of November 1994, it was absolutely necessary to defeat Aek Athens. The Greeks took the lead with Savevski and the atmosphere was intense in the Rossoneri locker room during the interval. But Don Fabio had a trick up his sleeve, he threw in an unprecedented Christian Panucci, a defender by role, with the number 7 shirt. He scored twice, his only double with the Rossoneri, which gave them the win and crucial points.

2006/07: YOANN GOURCUFF
A talent with few goals in his Rossoneri scoresheet. The young Breton Yoann Gourcuff was still considered a talent. Suggested to AC Milan by Cesare Maldini, Gourcuff started very well against the Greeks of Aek Athens. AC Milan, having survived the hallucinating summer of Calciopoli, returned, after Belgrade, in the Champions League on September 13th, 2006. After Inzaghi's initial goal, the second goal under the Curva Sud was that of Gourcuff who was seen as a small Kaká in the eyes of hopeful Milan fans that night. The game ended 3-0 in favour of AC Milan, Gourcuff didn't shine with the Rossoneri, but the illusion of that evening remained.
